about

“The Sun” was probably the most significant milepost on the ‘long and winding road’ that was the ‘career of The Pretty Things’ … not only because it was the first song that Phil (Phil May) and I ever wrote together, which was reason enough to celebrate on it’s own, but it caused a truly fundamental change of direction and emphasis. At the time of its writing, I was still a member of The Fenmen, but after that first afternoon’s collaboration, Phil asked me to join The Pretty Things. Not only that, but Phil also asked me to ask my Fenmen bandmate Jon Povey to join too. And so it came to pass that Jon & myself were infused into The Pretty Things line-up, and for the first time 3-part harmony became a common feature within the band, and our other musical influences and creativity, made possible such PT’s classics as “S. F. Sorrow” & “Parachute” etc.,

In 2009, we were helping Mike Stax (of Ugly Things) put together a Fenmen biopic from various old Fenmen tracks he had unearthed (But not enough to fill a CD). So Jon & I were recording some extras to complete the CD. We called ourselves The Bexley Brothers for this project … because that’s where we came from (so incidentally, did Phil & Dick … come to that, so did Mick & Keith - so we were in good company ! ... Mike Stax, of course, was and still is the world’s leading authority on all things Pretty Things, and being very much aware of the importance and significance of this song, he asked me if we would consider doing a version it for his CD “Sunstroke”. I was only too happy to grant Mike his wish. I felt that it was a song that could suit Jon’s voice so I got him to sing the lead part while I did the middle part and the call backs. This is a completely new remix and re-mastering of this 13-year old recording by me -and you now listen to it now on Bandcamp !

lyrics

The sun
The sun will cross the sky
Cross the sky
You reach out
You reach out
But it's too high
It's too high
Will you settle?
Will you settle?
Will you settle?
Will you settle?
Will you settle for that water touched by land?
Water touched by land

The sun
When the sun has passed you by
Passed you by
In the dark
In the darkness
You will cry
You will cry
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears will be soaked up by the sand
Soaked up by the sand

It's been my fault
Yes, mine from the start
If I told you
I've never fallen so hard
So hard
Oh Yes
It's been my fault

The sun
The sun has passed you by
Passed you by
In the dark
In the darkness
You will cry
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears
And your tears will be soaked up by the sand
Soaked up by the sand
Touching on the land
Soaked up by the sand
